Mindset Strategies from MMA Pro Awa Sow

Mental strength is just as crucial as physical prowess in MMA, a fact that Awa Sow knows all too well. As an MMA professional, she has faced the relentless demands of competition, understanding firsthand the toll it takes on the mind. Now, as she prepares for her first fight in the HEXAGONE MMA cage, her motivation burns brighter than ever.

In this exclusive interview, Awa Sow shares her experiences grappling with the mental challenges inherent in the sport, offering invaluable insights gleaned from years spent inside the cage.

How did you get started in MMA, and what have been some of the highlights of your career so far?

I stumbled into MMA quite unexpectedly. It all began when I went to pick up a friend after his classes. Coincidentally, I often arrived during sparring sessions – undoubtedly the most thrilling part of the training. Witnessing the intensity and camaraderie of those moments, I was immediately drawn to the sport. After each session, the coach would gather all the students to reflect on the session and share motivational insights. During these discussions, I truly grasped the significance of mental resilience and physical well-being in the pursuit of greatness. That martial spirit became my driving force.

Transitioning to professional MMA was a pivotal moment in my journey. A well-known manager named Giom PELTIER was organizing amateur tryouts with the ambition of forming a professional MMA team. With MMA coursing through my veins and an unyielding determination fueling my passion, I seized the opportunity with unwavering resolve. Amidst a pool of sixty fighters vying for just 2/3 pro contracts, the competition was fierce. Yet, as the sole woman at the detection camp, I was determined to prove myself. Securing that pro contract in 2021 was a testament to my dedication and perseverance.

If you could describe your sport in three words, what would they be?

It’s easy to give up in the face of adversity, but our minds become our greatest allies. In the heat of battle, amidst relentless and brutal blows, it’s essential to muster the determination to hold your position and refuse to surrender. When plans unravel and outcomes diverge from expectations, it’s our perseverance that propels us forward. Failure does not dictate our destiny; rather, it often serves as the genesis of new beginnings.

Mental. Resilience. Perseverance.

What's your pre-fight routine, and how do you ensure you're at the optimal level of arousal for performance?

My pre-fight routine mirrors my daily morning ritual: wake up, have breakfast, engage in muscle-awakening exercises like jogging or bear claws, followed by a shower and meditation. I prepare my gear for the fight. I ensure everything is meticulously listed, allowing me to focus solely on the fight battle without distraction. A brief nap follows, accompanied by a prayer before leaving the room, and then it’s off to the venue.

On the way, I reflect on my purpose, past achievements, and, most importantly, my future aspirations.

Just before stepping into the cage, I employ breathing techniques to enhance concentration and readiness for the impending challenge.

How do you stay mentally focused and sharp when your body tells you to stop?

In moments of physical exhaustion, it’s crucial to remember our purpose and the reasons behind our endeavors. While the mind can be a powerful ally or a formidable adversary, maintaining focus on the present task and our mission enables us to channel our intentions into action, propelling us toward our goals even in adversity.

Emotions can run high during training and competition. What are your top tips for keeping them in check and not letting them affect your performance?

Reconnecting with the fundamentals – understanding the underlying “why” – serves as a cornerstone. Moreover, possessing insight into the mechanics of emotions is invaluable. With the guidance of a mental trainer and my current studies in neuroscience, I’ve cultivated a deeper understanding of emotions, making them easier to comprehend and manage compared to those just embarking on this journey of self-discovery.

If you were to select an animal as your alter ego in a fight, which one would you choose and what attributes of that animal do you believe would benefit you in combat?

I’ll opt for a feline, like a lynx, panther, or leopard. I draw inspiration from animals because I believe they hold valuable lessons for us in martial arts. We often emulate their movements and body postures to escape dominant positions.

In combat, attributes like keen eyesight, acute hearing, agile and stealthy movement, and a survival instinct – the “eat or be eaten” mentality – would serve me well.

What recovery techniques do you use to replenish energy levels after intense training or fights?

Rest is essential for recovery, along with indulging in relaxing activities such as soothing bath massages. Prioritizing self-care is crucial; whether it’s a stroll in nature, quality time with family, or immersing yourself in the melodies of the piano, finding moments of relaxation is essential for rejuvenation.

In your opinion, what are the most effective ways for athletes to manage mental fatigue and prevent burnout? Any tips or advice?

Recognizing the initial signs of fatigue and promptly taking a step back is crucial. Persisting without pause can lead to detrimental outcomes. Conversely, allowing yourself the space to recharge and rejuvenate enables you to return with renewed energy and motivation, ready to tackle challenges with greater vigor.
